My Handknits

The scanner continued to beep as the woman at the checkout evaluated me. I could tell she was inspecting my sweater. The green is very rich and the style different from what you would normally see so close to the university.  Finally she remarked on my "beautiful sweater." I thanked her and proceeded to pay for my purchases. She kept looking until she asked the eventual question, "Someone didn't make that, did they?" Her voice conveyed respect, interest, and admiration. I told her that yes I had knit my sweater. She swooned as she called to another cashier telling her that I had made my sweater. With much  praise they oohed and aahed over the garment including anyone nearby in the discussion. I was embarrassed yet pleased. I could turn ordinary yarn into a beautiful sweater. As I walked away I could hear her tell others about the woman and the green sweater. With a spring in my step. I wanted to turn around to tell her I had knit my socks too.

  1. It is a sweater to be swooned over! :)

I was at the market the other day and there was a young woman stocking the produce on the shelves wearing a lovely handknit red scarf. I made a point of telling her how lovely it was, the look on her face said how pleased she was that someone had noticed. It takes so little to be kind! I am glad someone admired your lovely work.

  2. what a perfect post, and such beautiful writing (i want to say your name here) but only know proud mama. you surely looked beautiful in your beautiful hand knit and it just thrills me that someone took notice and then took the time to comment, and compliment you. i have a tendancy to rush away from such scenes, embarrassed like you, but i love how you stayed and let the words belong to you. if i would have been with you i defintely would have pointed out your socks!
    well done mama. xx lori

  6. This might be my most favorite post so far this year!! How fun. I love that not only did she have the nerve to ask, but she complimented you. I think so many times we think nice things and don't say them out of fear or embarrassment. I'm glad she asked and gave the compliment. It's well-deserved.

You're an outstanding knitter. I am sure you don't hear enough how great you really are. You do amazing work and I'm honored to have a few items hand-knit by you for Gus!!

I loved the pictures too. They added so much to your post. Well done! And the socks... that last part was the icing on the cake. Made me chuckle and happy inside.

Thanks for the great post, for always sharing your life, and for being the greatest knitter that I know!

  7. You should have showed her your socks Heather. (Maybe next time) it's a lovely feeling when someone acknowledges your hard work.

  8. I love when that happens! (not very often mind you) When it does, it really brings a smile. And yes, you should've shown her your socks too. Funny, I will stop people often and ask if they made their sweater or socks or scarf or whatever. (Yes, I'm that 'crazy' lady talking to everyone!) What is the sweater pattern? February Lady?
